From week 17 you may find some of your clothes simply won’t fit anymore. At this stage buying ordinary clothes in larger sizes may still be an option. However, during weeks 20 to 30 your weight gain will be fastest, you’ll really struggle to fit into normal clothes and maternity wear will be your most comfortable option.
Top tips
Go naturalYour skin can become quite sensitive and itchy during pregnancy and you may also get hot and bothered more easily, so opt for natural fabrics like cotton rather than man-made fibres.
Get supportTo help protect against ‘sag’ get fitted professionally for 2 to 3 maternity bras and wear them day and night (even in bed if it feels more comfortable). If you’re planning to breastfeed don’t forget to get measured for your nursing bra during your final weeks.
Tight fitThe commonest time for varicose veins to appear is around 20-24 weeks. To protect against them, wear Lycra-enhanced support tights/stockings.
Size mattersBe sure to buy maternity clothes which still give your bump room to grow – you’ll be amazed how big you can get. Do an internet search on maternity wear and take a leisurely browse through what is available before you hit the high street.
Big on topBear in mind that your chest will be bigger than ever straight after the birth so maternity tops (with front openings for easy feeding) will be the most comfortable thing to wear.
Flat feetWear comfortable, non-restrictive shoes as feet and ankles often swell in later pregnancy.
More dash than cashIt is not necessary to buy all your maternity clothes new. Where possible borrow from friends and family who’ve already been pregnant, check out the second hand shops or try eBay.
